Do you have a kid at your school that is constantly getting into trouble and starting fights? Cole in the story “Touching Spirit Bear” by Ben Mikaelsen is the perfect example of somebody who constantly is getting into trouble and is starting to have to pay for that.
Ever since Cole was a young boy he has been starting fights with almost anybody and getting into constant trouble. Cole was lucky because his parents would just pay it off and Cole didn’t really have any consequences. But this time he went too far. Once Cole found out that this boy snitched on him for a petty crime that he did and Cole didn’t take it well. After school Cole confronted him and then started to beat him in front of everybody until he was bleeding really bad and cowering. After that his parents decided not to pay to get him out of trouble. Because of this he had many decisions to make to decide what he wanted to do to pay his dues. This could have went a couple of ways he could have been tried as an adult and went to jail or he could have went to the circle of justice and gotten a lighter sentence if they believed he could change. Obviously Cole picked the circle of justice but ends up having to spend a year on a remote island alone.
Touching Spirit Bear is an example of person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. society, and person vs. nature because with person vs. person because he had a father who would drink and abuse him. Person vs. Self because with the way he was raised he has many problems and gets himself in trouble because of the way he acts. There are also examples of Person vs, Society because he causes a lot of trouble so he has to deal with the law. Finally Person vs. Nature because he is on an island for a year without shelter because he burned it down so he completely has to fend for himself.
In conclusion Cole has had many problems in his life and due to that he has become a bad kid and is finally having to pay for what he has done
